My personal belief is that ANWR should be declared wilderness and be left alone forever.  We have other, better alternatives to meet our energy needs, anyway.  Even if we did something as simple as improving our current efficiency, it would have dramatic effects.  For instance, we could require cars to get 5 more miles to the gallon or we could take a few SUV's off the road.  The National Resources Defense Council projects that if the average efficiency of passenger vehicles was raised to 39 miles per gallon--an achievable goal--then we would save 51 billion barrels of oil in 50 years.  Remember, ANWR is thought to only have 3 to 10 billion barrels.  Eventually though, we will need to turn to other sources of energy because we will simply run out of petroleum.  So why not switch over now, before we cause any more damage?  Let's preserve the wilderness so that future generations can see what we see.
